Meet our Staff and Volunteers

Camp D.I.G. Summer Camp: Where Adventure Awaits!

When my son was 14 years old, I took him to a dyslexia camp in Kentucky. I usually hesitate to describe something as life-changing, but in this case, it truly was.

For him, the greatest impact wasn’t necessarily the growth in his reading ability—it was the growth in his confidence. For the first time, I think he realized he wasn’t alone. There were other kids just like him, facing the same struggles and challenges. The friendships, encouragement, and sense of belonging made a lasting impression on both of us.

The days and months couldn’t pass quickly enough before we returned the following summer. At the end of that second year, my son looked at me and said, “We need a camp like this for kids back home in Alabama.”

Those words sparked a dream.

I spent time learning everything I could from the camp director in Kentucky and brought those ideas back home. In 2021, Dyslexia Community Resources was born, and that summer we hosted the very first Camp DIG. My son served as our lifeguard, and we welcomed eight students to camp that first year.

Since then, it has been incredible to watch Camp DIG grow. Each summer, more children experience success in reading, build confidence, and discover that they are not alone. Many campers return year after year, and one of my favorite things is seeing them throughout the year and hearing them ask, “How much longer until camp starts?”

I love that they love it.

Camp DIG is about more than reading. It’s about confidence, community, friendship, and helping children discover their strengths. Watching these students grow has been one of the greatest joys of my life, and I am grateful for every child and family who has been part of this journey.

Building Confidence, One Summer at a Time

I'M A PROUD MOM OF THREE WITH A HEART FOR HELPING CHILDREN THRIVE. I HAVE MORE THAN TWENTY YEARS OF TEACHING IN THE CLASSROOM, PRIVATE TUTORING, AND HOMESCHOOLING, I STEPPED AWAY FROM FULL-TIME TEACHING TO HOMESCHOOL MY SON FOLLOWING HIS DYSLEXIA DIAGNOSIS. THIS JOURNEY DEEPENED MY PASSION FOR PERSONALIZED EDUCATION AND EMPOWERING EACH CHILD TO REACH THEIR POTENTIAL.

I EARNED MY DEGREE IN EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION FROM TROY STATE UNIVERSITY IN DOTHAN AND AM ORTON-GILLINGHAM CERTIFIED, WITH ADDITIONAL TRAINING IN STRUCTURED LITERACY AND THE EQUIPPING MINDS PROGRAM. MY BACKGROUND HAS GIVEN ME THE TOOLS TO SUPPORT A WIDE RANGE OF LEARNING STYLES AND NEEDS.

BEYOND ACADEMICS, I LOVE SERVING MY COMMUNITY. I AM THE CHILDREN'S MINISTER AT SOUTHSIDE BAPTIST CHURCH IN OZARK, AN AMERICAN HERITAGE GIRLS LEADER, AND A VOLUNTEER WITH OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD. WHETHER IN THE CLASSROOM, AT CHURCH, OR IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD, MY MISSION IS TO NURTURE LEARNING, FAITH, AND JOY IN EVERY CHILD I MEET.

Dana has 6 children and has been homeschooling for 17 years. She and her husband have been married for 32 years and have made it their life’s work to raise their family with intention, purpose, and a love for the Lord.

Her children now range in age from 32 to 9, and watching them grow into adulthood has been one of her greatest joys. Their oldest works as an assistant funeral director and office manager at a local funeral home. One son dual enrolled in community college while being homeschooled. He has earned his associate degree in Drafting and Design Technology, later graduated from Auburn University in Mechanical Engineering, and now works for Alabama Power. Another son also earned his associate degree in Drafting and Design Technology and is now pursuing engineering. One of her children is currently graduating high school and plans to pursue a degree in education, while Dana continues homeschooling her two youngest children at home.

Her youngest son’s learning differences sparked a deep interest in understanding how children learn and how to better reach struggling students. That interest led her to begin working toward certification in Evidence-Based Literacy Instruction (EBLI), where she continues to grow in her passion for helping children learn well.

In addition to homeschooling, Dana is the founder and leader of the Wiregrass 4-H Club, which she started five years ago to serve homeschooled students in Houston County. Through that work, she has helped create meaningful opportunities for students to learn, grow, and build community beyond the classroom.

Before dedicating herself full time to raising and homeschooling her family, Dana worked as a veterinary technician. Today, she and her family live on a farm with horses, raise Pomeranians, and enjoy the full and busy life that comes with a home centered on faith, family, and meaningful work. Her life reflects a deep commitment to serving others, loving her family well, and following the Lord faithfully in every season.

Hello,

My name is Janet Keown and I want to share a story about my granddaughter. In second grade, at Christmas time, we were told that she was so far behind in reading that there was no way she could be promoted to third grade. I was heartbroken and determined to find help for her. I researched and found a tutor that was trained in the Orton-Gillingham Method of teaching reading (more on that later). My granddaughter began tutoring the next week; by the end of the year, she had made so much progress that she was promoted to the third grade. She continues with the tutoring sessions and she attends a camp in the summer for more intense tutoring.

I am a retired elementary education school teacher with ten years experience in teaching primary grades and ten years teaching special education in public schools. I have a Bachelor of Science in Education: Early Childhood Education and a Masters Degree: Early Childhood. I have worked during the summer at Camp DIG, which is held on week days for the month of June at the Vineyard in Ariton, AL. We tutor students with dyslexia or those struggling with reading for four hours each day using the OG Method using the S.P.I.R.E. curriculum. The rest of the day is spent doing fun camp activities.

ORTON GILLINGHAM TRAINING INFORMATION: While teaching at Laverne Primary School in Laverne, Tennessee I was trained by fellow teachers using the Spalding Method (very similar to OG) in a public elementary school using a curriculum called “Johnny Can Spell” from 1998-2002. More recently I have completed 60 hours training in the OG Method through Reed Charitable Foundation.
